I love this sign. You've seen it before. I just love it. What I really love about this image is I got the exposure just right -- and in a very tricky situation -- the sun shining through the sign - the snow -- sign is backlit -- the works...
An old friend of mine recommended I watch James Nachtwey's DVD, "War Photographer" - I did - and I'm glad I did because I learned something - not only about the travesties of war - and Jim's passion to document the associated atrocities - but I learned that hand metering, whenever and wherever possible, is a pretty good thing. In fact, incident metering is probably one of the coolest things I've found in a long time - it's magical, when done right. Sure, I use and incident meter when shooting portraits with flash, but It's not just for studio photographers -- nope. If you watch the DVD, you'll see Jim right there snapping away - in manual mode - checking his light every now and again with an incident meter.
I'm usually not much into tech talk - but I do like to talk about technique - and this one is a good one - especially in very tricky situations like this. I posted a link a few days ago about incident metering - I just thought I'd share with you an image where I used what I learned.
In case you missed this link yesterday - I wanted to post it again. William Gedney's work is incredible. Do yourself a favor and take some time looking through the 4900 images posted online.
